Expressive Language Disorder

Expressive language is the ability to formulate and produce language. It differs from Receptive language which focuses on the ability to understand and process language. Expressive language disorder is the inability for an individual to express him or herself through speech.

Most expressive language disorders occur with children during early childhood speech development, although the disorder can be acquired with adults through a traumatic brain injury. The disorder may be acquired through various medical conditions, including but not limited to strokes, seizures, head and/or brain injuries, or other various medical conditions that affects one’s ability to formulate and produce language.

Signs of an expressive language disorder can vary from child to child or from adult to adult. Usually, one can notice signs or symptoms with the individual not putting sentences together in a systematic way. Other signs may include not using appropriate grammar to speak a language, or not being able to facilitate proper word usage in his or her speech. Most commonly, one is not able to communicate his or her wants, needs, thoughts, or feelings as compared others. Quite often individuals who have an expressive language disorder may be able to understand words through receptive language. Both expressive and receptive language disorders may be mutually exclusive of one another.

Treatment of expressive language disorders includes working with an American Speech-Hearing-Language Association or ASHA certified Speech-Language Pathologist. At L&L Therapy Services, LLC, we provide wide array of speech and language therapy services including evaluations and treatment of Expressive Language Disorder.
